Okay. So right now I got a:
Male
Crowntail
Color: yellow
That im interested in breeding when he's ready. Curious what I should be looking toward breeding him with? As far as tail and color are concerned. Any help will be helpful

How long have you been keeping bettas? I don't recommend breeding until you have a few years experience under your belt.

I myself have only been taking care of ONE for about 2 years. But now I have 3.
My fiance on the other hand has bred them for a lfs before with her parents. But I dont like to ask her for tooo much help. Ive been researching and stalking these forums for about a year now Have read ALL your threads. Can even answer all the fish FaQs But I dont understand genetics on them and she says I gotta learn on my own. I just cant understand them.
We are setting up a fish room, with 29 gallon tanks, 10 gallons, and all the single bettas we buy will be in 5 gallons. With heaters and filteration systems. Were spending about $2000 on it.
She wants to open a pet store in our local town, and im fine with it, just think it would be cool to breed bettas. I have her help when i need it, but I like to learn on my own.

if you do like CTs you could do a full CT spawn, good luck though.

Besides cellophane, yellow is one of the less dominant colors, so just about any other color will cover yellow. If you want multi colored CT, I would get a multi female, if you want yellow, get a yellow, and so on...

Well sounds like you're prepared.

If you want more yellow fish you should select a yellow crowntail female as she will contain the NR (non-red) gene suitable for your male. If you cannot find one locally try www.aquabid.com

Yellow is simply the red gene in bettas that has been reduced to a degree. There isn't really a particular gene that allows you to breed true yellows (as in, take a yellow and breed it with a yellow and get 100% yellows) you would most likely get a mixture of reds, oranges, pineapples and maybe 1 or 2 yellows. It's all about luck, having just enough red "hidden" in the fish. As MrV said, your odds are greatly increased by breeding him with a female that contains the non-red gene. It also depends greatly on the genetic background of your male. Where did you get him from? A breeder who can tell you his genetic background, and what his parents were? A pet store? If you don't know what his parents looked like, or even his grandparents, odds are you'll get some oddball colored fish in your spawn. For example, both of my parents have brown hair, and my brother has blonde hair. How could this happen? Because my dad carried the blonde gene, which came from his mother. Genetics in fish are practically the same. It is confusing at first, but if you study and research the doodoo out of it, its very VERY fascinating.

Yellow is very recessive. As stated it's a result from NR (non red) genes often hidden in cambodian colored bettas - but cambodian with no irid colors, only pale body and clean red fins. This line of colors varies from extended red (a bright red - NOT cherry red), yellow, orange, and cambodian. Those are the colors you want to breed to and will be the colors you most likely will produce...... remember, you don't want to breed to any irid colors.
