After researching a bunch of stuff on the forums here, I have compiled a list of what I have bought for my 5 gallon tank setup for my betta Cobalt. This is something that I thought would be a nice starting point for a person who doesn't know much about what to get, or who feels a bit overwhelmed about which items to purchase. I know I felt a bit confused when I realized all of the things to look for to make a happy betta, so hopefully this list will help you out!

Tank:

So far this has been a nice tank. Though the lid plastic is a bit flimsy, it is certainly durable enough if you are careful when opening and closing the lid. For the price though, you can't beat it!

Everything else:

I have made this list on amazon.com, which is where I purchased the items:

Some notes on the list above:
The airline tubing is used for siphoning/gravel vacuuming. It takes about 20 minutes to siphon out 1 gallon with that size tube, but it's main advantage is putting clean water back into the tank. Since it takes a long time for the new water to go into the tank, it is less stressful on the betta. Plus if the tube was much larger you wouldn't have much time to vacuum out the gravel!

You may also want to buy a silk plant at the pet store when you go to pick up your betta. The middle silk plant in the attached picture is a plant I grabbed at petco. It adds some more hiding places too!

Also, I don't have the hammock added in the picture below (which is optional by the way), but is a nice addition to your betta's home!

The tank from walmart actually comes with a filter, so if you need to keep it cheap you could probably just use that. But since I want to cycle, I purchased the filter from amazon which comes with the sponge and has overall better reviews. Either way, some kind of filter is generally better than no fliter!

Anyways, hopefully this helps people looking to buy stuff for a new betta. If there are any questions or edits to this I should make just let me know!

Clarification on my initial setup:

I now use a mini size marina gravel vacuum for water changes instead of the airline tubing, which took WAY too long. If you squeeze the tubing while the water is draining, you can extend the time you vacuum (e.g., after sucking up some gravel, squeeze the tube almost shut, and the re-position the vacuum at the next spot and release).

Also, it seems as though my initial amazon link for the list is outdated. Since I can't edit the original post anymore, this is the link for the updated list of items from amazon:

Actually that looks like a great tank! I bought the tetra(marineland) crescent 5 gallon which is cool until you open the box and see the cheap plastic top it has that has a huge open feeding hole(way too big in my opinion). Well Suffice to say, I am returning it as its not worth the money. You can get on sale at petsmart for about $40 but to me the quality wasn't that good and though I like the LED lighting, this one clips onto the back so every time you want to clean the tank you have to unclip the light.

can you tell me anything about the included filter? that's the tank i'm considering for Swish. it'll work if i don't want to cycle, right?
Well most people suggest trying to cycle a 5 gallon, but you don't have to. The tank actually comes with a filter that is supposed to be good, so you wouldn't need to get the aquaclear one I got if you aren't planning on cycling. One of the main reasons I got the other filter is because it's hang on the back and it has the sponge inside to help cycle the tank.

This is perfect! Very cheap for a 5 gallon setup!

I think I may throw out the hand me down I just got, and get this one. Can you upload some more pictures form the side, etc.? I'm really interested in seeing how big it is! Thanks so much

I'd say go for the cycling, it does make things easier and helps maintain a more steady chemistry in the tank. Heck, I'm cycling even though I know I'll have to move the tank back and forth from the dorm back home for the summer, so I'd say it's totally worth it :)
