Betta is a whole genus of more than 73 species. All of them live in Southeast Asia. Betta splendens is in fact an actual wild species, but the domestic betta has been called so because its main genetics are those of the wild Betta splendens.

The most known wild Betta species live in Thailand, Laos, Cambodja and Malaysia. All species from the Betta splendens complex such as Betta imbellis and Betta splendens live here, in swamps and pools.

But there are a lot of other species that live on the island of Borneo and Indonesia, too. This are mostly mouthbrooding species such as Betta macrostoma and Betta channoides.

If you'd like to know more about this feel free to read this post about wild betta distribution and habitat on my blog.
