So I got an early X-mas present which is an Animal Planet betta fish book. This is exactly what it says about the Betta vs Bete debate:

"You can pronounce scientific names anyway you want. Most people pronounce this one as BET-uh (similar to better). A good number pronounce it BAY-tuh, (as for beta). The first oneis closer to theorigional pronunciation of Latin, which is commonly used in math and software Technology."

Hope that clears it up!

I have that book too....I say it both ways.

I always say BET-ta. I don't like when it's "BAY-ta" it doesn't sound right. That's how it's spelled, too, so why do people say baytta? Betta rolls ofthe tongue easier for me, so it makes more sense to call it that. That's why I get annoyed at videos where someone talks and says "This is my Bayta fish." GRRRRRRR

Rant over (=

Thanks for posting this bloo, than more people will say it right.

I say BAY-tuh, I have a strong Kentucky accent, so it just comes out that way XD Plus, when I do say BET-tuh I just sound retarded since all the other words in my sentence have an Appalachian ring to them :p

Edit: Umm, is it bad that when I tried to find a good example of an Appalachian dialect that I couldn't find a good example? They all sounded like normal people to me XD

I guess I only notice when someone ISN'T speaking with my dialect, I thought the proper English speaking lady at the beginning of the video sounded weirder to me :p
