Breeding my male CT

Hi everyone!

I got a male CT a few months ago, and he just blew a HUGE bubble nest, its 1/4 the size of his tank now, and I was wondering if I should breed him with a VT or a CT female? I would like interesting looking babies, and was also wondering if the color of the breeding pair play a large part in the color of the babies or if it is all sorts of colors that come out regardless of the coloration of the parents?

Thanks in advance! :)

Breeding bettas isn't just something you can do on a whim, at least if you want to do it successfully. Based on your post, it sounds like you don't really have much of an idea of the costs and time involved in raising betta fry. You are probably looking at a couple hundred dollars in initial outlay, as well as around 4-6 months of time spent doing daily maintenance.

To answer your question, I would only ever breed a CT to a CT. You will end up with messy fins if you cross a VT onto a CT. Unfortunately, I don't know much on colour genetics in bettas so that is going to have to be answered by someone else.

Color mixing is personal preference. Most color mix is advisable, depending on what you are trying to create.
Eg. the color in your avatar is a mixture of all base colors - irid, red, black. It is more of a traditional color. If you like these color pattern, you can breed any two dark colors.

Let's say you prefer solid color patterns. You have to separate each color layer OR do not mix colors - breed irid to irid, red to red, and black to black.

So, what are you trying to achieve?

Where I live, there is only 2 pet shops. One is family owned, and they do not take care of thier animals very well (dirty cages/tanks, under fed, small cages/tanks, and over all not taken care of), so I refuse to buy anything from them. The other pet shop is Petco, and they do not have much of a selection of colors, from what I have seen there, they only have solid colors, shades of blue and red seem to be all they have, I have seen very few (maybe 2) white Betta's.
