I recently bought 2 dumbos that were adverstised as breeding pair. She came gravi so I placed them in their seperate tanks, with him having the tank I intended for breeding. I conditioned for a week or so and placed the bubble wrap in as Ive normally done when I hope to spawn. He immediately began constructing a nest underneath the wrap. I realized the next day he really wasnt pumping them out as Ive had many males do, and when he does, most of them instantly pop. He's also very slow, like creepy slow. Id say he makes one attempt every ten to fifteen mintues and just floats at the surface. I figured he's tired so I placed a plant near by and now and again he chills on the plant and attempts to blow bubbles rarely. Id say after 2 days he had 15 or so bubbles of various sizes under the wrap of his own. I placed her in the tank cupped with the thought he might get at it when she is near but that didnt amount to anything but a distraction. Its been 4 days and he is displaying typical territorial/ breeding behaviors, so much so that my wife suggests that he believes the wrap is his own and is confused. He guards the wrap and hangs under it primarily. Im starting to agree with her. They appeared slightly older than I believed I was buying but he and her both seem lively and not as laid back as bettas that have reached an older, barren age. He also appears healthy, displaying no obvious signs of illness and displaying interest in her. She is gravid and willing, the water is fine, but he has me worried. Either he has a mucus, breathing issue and cant make bubbles last, he's highly highly inexperienced and lazy, or is confused. I know that some bettas construct during the spawning process but Ive never seen it in practice and didnt want to risk it with the bubbles he is managing immediately bursting. Any thoughts or suggestions?
