Female VS male in a community tank?

Hello! I lurk a lot on here and have been looking for a thread like this to read but haven't found one... if there's already something started like this already I apologize. In the near future I'm thinking of investing in a 10 or 15 gallon tank, and of course, I was thinking of putting a betta in said tank.

I'm not entirely sure what I would be putting in there yet (obviously fish that are compatible with bettas!), but I was wondering if a male or a female does better in a community tank? I've never had a female betta before therefore I'm not sure if their temperaments really vary from the males. Thank you!

+1 Fishybitty. Depends on the Betta and its nature. Archibald stresses in the community tank while Dexter gets lethargic and "depressed" when he's not.

Logically, I would think the advantage to having a male would be less maneuverability so less ability to catch or nip other fish. Unless, of course, the male is a Plakat then it's zoom. zoom, zoom. ;-)

I think the key is to get the betta young if u want him/her in a community tank.
I have kept females with corys, guppies and mollies without any problems at all.
My male plakat is currently in my community tank and he's getting on fine!
My male VT won't tolerate any tank mates, he was about 7months old when I got him and he'd always been alone, I think that May have something to do with it.
Really depends on the betta and how it's brought up I guess.

I have an orange male veiltail, Mango, who loves his 7 danio glofish tankmates. They live in a 15 gallon. Before Mango I had a different betta in there for a while and all he did was hide. Mango gets sad and lonely when alone. I have an orange and white veiltail, Mandarin, who got very sad when I moved his dwarf and honey gourami tankmates (1 each) out and into a 29 gallon. They lived in a 20 long. I emptied that so I can make clear acrylic dividers for a rainbow tank. I moved Mandarin into a divided 10 gallon with two other bettas. After I put Mandarin's tank mates in different tanks he got very sad and downright mopey, even with a 10 gallon all to himself. He became much happier when I moved the fluval chi with a new betta next door. It's funny--they are curious about each other, they watch each other and interact but no glares or flares. I have 3 females in a varied 75 gallon community and they do fine. For a while I had a black male crowntail in there too but all he did was hide. I now have him in a divided 6 gallon and now I actually see him.
