Food coming out of Betta's gills

So when I got my Betta the tank came with a sample size packet of "TetraBetta Floating Mini Pellets."

He seemed to like them well enough so when the packet started getting low I figured I would keep him on the same brand but then I was reading around about it and apparently this food is more on the cheap (quality wise) side and a lot of people recommended "New Life Spectrum" Betta food.

Yesterday the New Life Spectrum food came in the mail and I gave him one pellet of the old food then one pellet of the new food, to sort of ween him off the old food. Well he eats the TetraBetta pellets just fine, no problem. However when he ate the New Life Spectrum pellets it starting coming out of his gills, sometimes in quite large chunks.

So today I fed him a New Life Spectrum pellet first and again it started coming out of his gills, almost half of it probably came out. I decided to check really closely this time when I fed him the TetraBetta pellet to see if it does come out of his gills and I saw one very tiny particle of food come out of his gills, nowhere close to how much of the New Life Spectrum comes out.

The pellets are roughly the same size, if anything the Tetra pellets are slightly larger. I thought maybe I've just been feeding him too much but it just happens with the New Life pellets. I also tried a suggestion I read about soaking the food in water for a few minutes first but that seemed to make the problem worse.

Should I just stick to the Tetra food since he seems to handle that better, even though it might be lesser quality food? Is there someway to make it easier for him to not expel the food from his gills? I tried cutting a pellet in half but it had pretty much the same result.

I feel like I wasted money on this food now but I'd rather keep my Betta healthy with a nice clean tank instead of having chunks of pellets clouding his tank. I try to get as much as I can with the turkey baster but it's hard to get it all.

Keep him on the Tetra stuff for now, if you can feed some frozen/freeze dried food while someone more experienced comes along to figure it out. What size is your tank? I noticed you said the pellets came with the tank, not many tanks sell pellet with the tank. Flakes yes, pellets no.

I'm glad you upgraded him. There is a form in you may want to fill out in the 'Diseases and Emergencies' section. It may do some good, I've never heard of that happening to any of the many betta owners I've met/read about/watched.
Glad you got him out of that half gallon, I was hoping he wasn't still in a small bowls hat probably came with the food.

Yeah I got him out of that tiny bowl pretty quick. I know 2.6 still isn't ideal but he's got a lot more room and now he has a filter and a heater and he seems to be healthy for the most part, except for a darn tail biting problem that I think is mostly gone now.

I'd switch over to the NLS pellets or maybe try omega one.
Isn't NLS "New Life Spectrum"?

I went with this food because it seemed to be highly recommend :/

Is there another NLS food I'm not aware of?

Edited: Ah I see now, you're suggesting I switch to the NLS and just keep an eye on food coming out of his gills. I thought you were suggesting I buy NLS pellets and try those, was worried I got the wrong food :p

My fish do this sometimes. It typically is a sign that I have them too big of a bite of their gel food (only happens with the gel food cause it's soft and it shoots out in smaller pieces). I'd switch over to the NLS pellets or maybe try omega one. My fish Aegaeon, the spazz, will do this when he gets excited about food and he gets so spastic he shoots it out his gills. I don't really worry about it, but if it's excessive you might want to keep an eye on it.

Ideal is 5 gallons. Perfect is a personal 10+ gallons. Works and keeps fish happy is 2.5 gallons. Most members here have no issue if you keep your fish in a 2.5 gallon aquarium, even better would be to add a marimo moss ball and or live plants to keep the water clean (if you don't have live yet).

Yes NLS means new life spectrum, actually, I did get NLS because of all the good reviews, but when you run out of NLS, try omega one, the ingredients looked even better (or is it 'even betta'?) than NLS, and NLS is a bit pricey, it does however come with more pellets than other brands.

What's perfect for one fish may not be perfect for another. Some bettas stress and tailbite in large tanks because they simply can't adjust from living in small jars/cups their entire lives. The perfect size is what the individual fish thrives in.
