I think something is wrong with our girl Cosmic. We've had her almost 3 months. Over the last week, she's been lethargic and hiding A LOT. I tried to link a video showing her lethargy and struggles but as this is my first post, I'm unable to.
I tested waters on Wednesday and found there was a slight amount of ammonia, 0.25. I did a 25% water change followed by a 50% water change yesterday morning. Parameters were good before the change. 0 ammonia, PH 8.0 (stable), 0 nitrites, 10ppm nitrate. Temp is set to 80, and she's in a 5 gallon tank. No tank mates. We have another betta in a separate tank in a separate room and she's doing okay. My son had a betta before Cosmic and he was alright for a while, but got sick quickly and he didn't make it. He was in the same tank that Cosmic is in, which was bleach soaked and scrubbed before using again. We got a whole brand new filter, gravel and decorations for Cosmic because we never figured out what made Nightmare so sick so fast and I was hoping by "starting over", we'd have better luck and my son's next betta wouldn't have the same fate as Nightmare. Could the tank itself be problematic? It was brand new for Nightmare. Purchased in February of this year.
Anyway, Cosmic seemed back to her old self after the 50% water change and vacuuming the gravel but within hours, went back to hiding. Last week, she'd still come out for food or when we came to see her, but over the weekend, she needed lots of encouragement and we really struggled to even find her to encourage her.
I noticed that when she's swimming it's like her back end will float upwards, she also had a string of poop hanging out of her yesterday so I suspect there might be some constipation going on. She's fed 2 pellets in the morning, 1 in the evenings, and is fasted every Wednesday and fed daphnia on Sunday mornings before the water changes (I do 50% every Sunday) and not fed again until Monday morning. I plan to fast her again today to move the poop out. I also noticed while taking this video there appears to be a red vertical line down her side. I've never seen this on her before. Is this an injury?
As soon as my partner wakes up, I plan to go get our breeding box and keep her closer to the surface to rest. I can cup her and get other video then too but it'll be a few hours as he's asleep and all the fish stuff is kept in our bedroom.
Is she going to be okay? Anything else I can try? I added Stressguard after the water change yesterday but I don't know what else to do or if I'm just imagining something is going on. I'm in Canada so it's difficult to get medications here. I do have Polyguard on hand if necessary.
