Here we go, beginning the "cycling" process :D

Thanks to the wealth of knowledge and support from everyone, I am finally ready to begin cycling my tank. I was able to get the Freshwater API master test kit, and picked up a bottle of Seachem Prime since everyone on here swears by it. And with the guidance of the very detailed step by step cycling tutorial provided I am finally ready! My tank was established on the 31st of March and my Betta Thorny was placed in it April 1st so it's only 4 days old and is 3.5 gallon.

Wish me luck!

TEST RESULTS

PH = Darker than the 7.2 marker and lighter than the 7.6 marker so I'm gonna say 7.4
Ammonia = Look close to 0.50ppm
Nitrite = Looks like it's halfway between 0.50ppm and to 1.0ppm
Nitrate = Looks like 0ppm

Based on these results it looks like I should do a water change immediately. Does this sound normal? How could these chemicals build up so quickly when my tank is so new? Should I do a 25% or 50% water change? And then once I've changed it should I test again?

Oh it doesn't? It says on the bottle it detoxifies Nitrite? I will do a 50% water change right now. Should I add prime to the new water or directly to the tank? And how much should I add to a 3.5 gallon I'm getting confused with how high a concentration this is. Based on my calculations I should add about 1/3 of 1ml to the tank?

Add it to the new water, 2 drops per gallon.

If you are following the tutorial below, note it says a 25% water change at .25ppm of either Ammonia or Nitrite; or a 50% at .50ppm. I prefer .25ppm. I also dose Seachem Stability: Double dose on Day 1; regular dose Days 2-8.

Prime is a precaution but not a substitute for water changes. During cycling you may have to do a water change every day to keep parameters down; some days you may have to do two.

If you are not already aware, I just wanted to add that the detoxifying effects of Seachem Prime are only temporary. The effects last only 24-48 hours before any ammonia/nitrite etc. still present is released.

Seachem Prime buys you some breathing space when undertaking a fish-in cycle, but water changes are still necessary as the ammonia/nitrite will continue to build-up.
