Hi everyone! I’m sorry this is a long post! 🤦🏼‍♀️ One week ago today, husband and I decided to get a betta fish (my first time ever owning a fish) and when I saw this little guy I just couldn’t leave him. :( he looked so sad and had no color compared to the other bettas there. *See the first picture for reference. He is a halfmoon plakat male that we named Marvin. Once we brought him home and introduced him to his tank he acted like a new fish! He has been eating very well and loves swimming up to us as we walk by. Since it’s my first time owning a betta fish, I want to make sure I’ve been educating myself on the care he needs (Proper tank, water parameters, temperature, etc.) so I have been doing a lot of researching on bettas and have been constantly concerned about how he has looked since the day we got him. He was clamping his fins, had no color/was very dark or dusky and I noticed he had what looked like either shedding or missing scales on his left side. Throughout the last few days he has started to look 100x better! However, you can still see the spots where the scales look different and they’re more noticeable now that his color has started to return. They are not pineconing and I haven’t noticed any cotton-like texture. It’s hard to get a good look at them so I can’t really tell if it’s a cut but I included the best picture I have of it. Can someone please offer some advice on what this may be and whether or not I’m just being paranoid? I did purchase salt to give him a salt bath but don’t want to disrupt him getting comfortable in his new home if I don’t have to. Thank you!

Hmm, many things can cause the scales to look like that. Possible injury if he scraped up against something, poor water quality, or parasitic or bacterial infection can also be causes. Aquarium salt is very good for them (follow directions on box as to how much for your tank size) and if you think it's improved since you got him, it may continue to get better on it's own. I don't know enough yet to offer any other advice so I'll let other chime in on that. It does look like more of an injury to me as well rather than some sort of infection. Let us know if he keeps improving and so glad you "rescued" him. He's a cutie for sure!

Hi, I'm sorry I didn't see this -

Can you fill in the answers to this form as best you can?
https://www.bettafish.com/threads/p...e-read-before-posting-fill-out-this-form-so-we-can-best-help-your-betta.612810/

Also, this is helpful;

as is this one, although I need to point out that there's an embedded link that talks about doing 100% water changes. That large an amount is no longer recommended due to the stress to the fish, and the risk of damaging the beneficial bacteria;

This is also helpful. Fluval Bug Bites, Devour Bug Formula and New Life Spectrum are good brands along with freezedried daphnia (Hikari Biopure has a decent product and a food ring can help contain the tiny granules);
