Hello everyone!

So I got a new pair of bettas from a breeder and I know the male was around 13 weeks old he should be closer to 15 weeks old now but I’m not sure how old my female is. After a week of conditioning I tried to breed them I set up their tank and all seemed to go well he would flare at her non stop and she would stare at him and it would seem she would bow to him so after two days I released her into the tank.
She was showing her stripes not too pronounced but I could see them. I released her even though he didn’t have a bubble nest cause I read that sometimes it takes for the female to be in the tank to move the male into action. He isn’t really chasing her. He follows her and flares at her every chance he get and when he gets her under the almond leaf or the foam cup portion I gave him they’ll get real close like then she’ll just swim away.
Still no bubble nest yet. Neither seem aggressive but they do seem somewhat interested. Idk what to make of this situation. Should I separate them and maybe try again in a month or two? Or just give them time.

Male is rather young. Some males need more time for the instinct to kick in. When you breed these males, they usually need longer courtship periods.

The average courtship period for first time breeders is around 3 days - reason why many float females for two days. But sometimes they don't count floating time as courtship.

Don't worry about nest. They will spawn without it and fertilized eggs will hatch. As long as they're showing breeding behavior, they will eventually get the deed done.. . . . You're lucky that you have a gentle male.

As for light - your choice. They don't need light. I breed some of mine in dark tubs totally covered.
