Housing:
How many gallons is your tank? 10
Does it have a filter? Yes- sponge
Does it have a heater? Yes
What temperature is your tank? 78-79 degrees
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration? airline thru sponge filter
Does your Betta have tank mates? What kind? None. (Snails all died). Well, there are freshwater limpets

Food:
What food brand do you use? Omega One (betta pellets, flake, crushed shrimp pellet) and NLS pellets
Do you feed flakes or pellets? both
Freeze-dried? yes- bloodworms- soaked in garlic juice, once every other week
How often do you feed your Betta? How much? Twice a day if flake, once a day if other. He fasts once a week. He also gets live mosquito larvae once or twice/wk, sometimes small moths, fruit flies or insect larvae from my garden/kitchen (no pesticides in use). His portions are two flakes, or four micropellets, or same amount of pieces crushed shrimp pellet, or two NLS pellets. Soaked bloodworms- 2. Mosquito larvae- 5 to 8 at a time depending on what I catch.

Maintenance:

Before your Betta became ill how often did you perform a water change? once a week
What percentage of water did you change? 50%
Do you vacuum the substrate or just dip out water? lightly vacuum
What additives do you use? What brand of conditioner? Prime

Water Parameters:
What are your water parameters? Please give exact numbers. If tested by pet store please get exact numbers. "Fine" or "Safe" won't help us help you. Important: Test your water *before* the regular water change; not after one.

Ammonia: zero
Nitrite: zero
Nitrate: 20ppm
pH: 7.5
Hardness (GH): 10
Alkalinity (KH): 5

Symptoms and Treatment:

When did you first notice the symptoms? one month ago
How has your Betta’s appearance changed? Lumps on his side and behind pectoral fin/gill plate
How has your Betta’s behavior changed? lies still on bottom or near water surface a lot
Is your Betta still eating? Yes
Have you started treating your Betta? If so, how? 2 rounds of kanaplex w/a few days break in between, a week of no meds, now tetracycline
Does your Betta have any history of being ill? No
How long have you owned your Betta? Was he or she ill or suffering some sort of damage when purchased? Nine months. Yes- kink in spine near the tail- see pictures

More information (sorry if this is wordy): I got this betta from Petco. Discovered when I got him home- and could see him better- that he has a bend in his caudal peduncle. I don't know if it is an injury (someone dropped him?) or a birth defect. I was told on another forum that double-tail bettas often have spinal deformities. I didn't know. I love his blue color and friendly personality so I kept him. His name is Sam.

About a month ago I saw he was starting to get two round lumps on his left side. Then a lump showing under the gill or where pectoral fin joins the body, also on left side. There seems to be white tissue starting to bulge out from under the gill area there. You can see in the pictures his right side doesn't have those growths but I just noticed he does have splits in pectoral fin now.

Also he now appears to have a bit of cloudy eye so I started a dose of tetracycline after the kanaplex, hoping if he has internal bacterial infection this could also help? I really think he has either cancer or lymphocystis and I know I can't do much for that. But I read somewhere that internal bacterial infection can also cause swellings, however I can't find any pictures of what that looks like. If tetracycline does no good, my last attempt would be to try furan-2 or to get mycin I and II but I don't want to use more meds if it is futile.

Does it look like lymphocystis...? Please note in the photos, the ones of his left side are a week or two apart. And there's a pic of the whole tank, for ref. Thanks.

Ok. My last betta died from dropsy... that kind of swelling looked a lot different from this- I just got home from a meeting and looked at the fish and felt like weeping. He swam eagerly to greet me, but the lumps on his sides look like they are bursting open. It looks like it must hurt?

A tumor sounds serious to me, how long could he live with that? and the only thing I know to do for a cyst is to pierce and drain it? (I forget the term for that procedure) it's not something I think I could do without killing him in the process.

No. I have General Cure and Levamisole HCI... But now the lump under fin and larger one on his side have bust open- does a parasite cause that kind of damage?
The first photo has me thinking either a cyst or a tumor. If it bursts open, sounds like a cyst and there isn't really anything you can do for him.
I guess it's a cyst, then. Should I add something to the water to help him heal the open wound. Frequent water changes I know are good but it's hard on my plants- removes all the ferts I dose only once a week. I know that's silly to be concerned about when my fish is so ill, though.

Thanks for the replies...

There are already a few leaves in the tank- I just started using them earlier this month. He has two IAL leaves and one jackfruit leaf. Should I add a few more? I thought he felt better after I added the leaves- he became more active and relaxed (at least, for a while) but it did not make a noticeable difference on the pH. My tapwater is 7.8 to 8.0 pH but with the driftwood, montmorillonite clay substrate and leaf litter the tank has been 7.4 or 7.5 stable for a long time. The leaves didn't change that.

Actually, I didn't add leaves to lower pH, I used them for the healing properties- but since I noticed the pH was unaffected I'm wondering if I have enough leaves in there to be beneficial for the fish?

Doing water change now.

I saw someone brew the IAL like a tea...it removed the beneficial stuff faster- maybe try steeping some in some hot water and then allowing it to cool completely before adding to tank ---so your guy will get the benefits without having to wait too long. The water (while brewing) will get REALLY dark---like tea colored.

Crossing my fingers for you!

Well, I'm not an expert in betta parasites.

That said, some parasites in other animals can make a cyst like structure form and then burst out. If you want to be horrified, google the human tapeworm.

If you have something that didn't respond to antibiotics, then it's either a cyst, a tumor, or maybe less likely something parasitic. There's nothing you can do if it's a cyst or a tumor, so I guess my thinking would be to try treating for parasites, because that would be something that might get better. Also, if you are feeding critters that you source from outside, a parasite wouldn't be impossible, right?

I hope I don't sound rude. But it's a bad idea to treat betta with medicine if one is not sure about the disease. If wrong medication is used, it will be rather harmful. It can weaken the beta's immune system.

You can lower the water line, so it will be easier for him to swim up for air. I know how horrified you are... Keeping water clean and warm is only thing we can do for cyst/tumor :( Two of my betta had cyst or tumor and died eventually. They looked really bad and painful... I believe tumor/cyst are genetic most of the times because they were brothers.

My lfs doesn't usually have bettas. I wish they did, or that I could find a local breeder. I don't know if I want to get another betta from the chain pet stores around here- they all have them and they look beautiful but I never keep one to stay alive more than two years.

My school of cherry barbs on the other hand, I had five years and still going strong! Not a single one of them ever got growths like this.

Over last 24 hrs Sam deteriorated rapidly. Open sore on his side larger, gray necrotic-looking tissue. Under the fin it was reddish. He quit eating, was having trouble swimming, struggled to breathe. Hid under the leaves most of the time. It really looked like he was suffering and I have never seen photos of a fish this bad with story of it recovering.

I euthanized him with clove oil. Very unhappy day.

I took a few last pictures because I have a bad feeling maybe this was TB? I would like if someone can tell me. I noticed once he was in the container that he had become emaciated again. Do the sores look like ulcers or cysts. I really hope (an awful thing to hope) yes this was a tumor and not something contagious I might have spread to my other tanks. I do wash my hands and rinse equipment in boiling hot water or use mild bleach solution in case of disease, but unfortunately I don't have separate maintenance items for every tank.
