Petsmart should just hire me already

I help customers more than the employees do, I swear. There was this one lady, who after talking to her, found out was a teacher. Her red betta, Frank, had suddenly died, so she was trying to find another one to replace him with that looked similar enough so the kids wouldn't notice a difference and be upset that Frank had died. She wanted a red betta with full fins. I helped her find a few, and she eventually managed to pick one out. She has him in a large vase. I didn't ask if it was heated or not, as I had to hurry to my volunteer job at the kitty section, but I believe she said it was about two gallons or maybe a bit more. She said it wasn't one of the little ones, and she measured with her hands. I'm pretty sure it was the big vase I always see at Walmart that I keep being tempted to get just so I can show that a vase isn't an improper home, since this thing was massive and held at least two gallons.

I keep applying there, but they won't hire me. :( Probably because I have no job experience. I'm hoping MAYBE I can apply again after a while of volunteering, so my "boss" can be listed as a reference. I'd love to work there, and I think from being on here, I know quite a bit about the bettas, and other fish too. I already know plenty about dogs and cats. I feel more knowledgeable about the fish than the fish employees do. :( They keep pushing bowls and no heaters, when pushing bigger tanks and heaters would make a bigger sale. Makes no sense to me.

Thanks. xD I always look at the bettas and rearrange their cups so they can breathe and get as much attention as possible. I pushed the moss balls back so I could pull some of the dragon scales forward... >w>;

I've applied to my local petsmart many times, I have an open schedule, work experience, good references, etc. I sometimes wonder if they won't hire me because I have too much animal experience!

I don't have any work experience because places expect you to have work experience in order to get hired, so I can't get work experience because no one will hire me. I have an open schedule too. I'm on homebound from school, so I can be there ALLLLL day.

You could always work at a different retail, one that's easier to get into, for a while for experience.

I worked at Walgreens as cashier for one summer 3 years ago and I got a position as cashier at Petsmart last week. It helps that I have plenty of available time to work and plan to be there longer than a few months. I also went in to speak with the hiring manager after I sent an application.
I've tried. :( Applied EVERYWHERE I can think of.

I am on the same boat with you!! I have applied to Petco and Petsmart and haven't heard anything from them...I'm an animal science major for goodness sake!!

BUT I have never had a 'real' job and so technically I have no job experience...I was going to work with my boyfriend at Ingles to get that under my belt but now I'm taking summer classes so that'll have to wait until next year...maybe.

But I'm glad I'm not the only one. Honestly I know more about the fish at my petco and petsmart than the employees do! I think they just like to keep them on the ignorant side so they'll sell more things that aren't actually good.

But good luck with getting a job :)

bettacrazygirl, I think volunteering there (as you are doing) is the best thing you can probably do to get your foot in the door; if they aren't hiring, they won't hire you, and when they do hire, you'll already know someone in house who has seen your ethic at work. Also, do you have other fish stores/pet stores locally that might be looking to add another employee? "Job experience" is overrated, because if you had a job like the one you're applying for, then you'd have a job already; but where job experience is lacking, it can be the kiss of death. You must wonder also what they would consider "relevant life/job experience." Do you know your "boss" in the kitty section well enough already (have you been there long enough) to ask her/him to speak to someone in the fish section--or, when were you thinking of having that conversation, and could you have it sooner without jeopardizing your chances somehow? And if it came to this, would you want to submit/subserviate to someone who knows/cares less about fishes than you do--a real "boss" who has his/her eyes on upper management?

I'm hoping the volunteering will help a little. I've only been there twice so far. I go once a week. I plan on waiting a bit before asking if she'd talk to someone for me. I wouldn't care if I work for someone who knows less or cares less about the fish. I can at least help the customers get stuff that would be better for the fish than what the other employees suggest.

It frustrates me greatly when someone I know from school gets a job somewhere that I've been applying to, when he has a busier schedule than me, no work experience, or even likes animals. :(

I applied at PetSmart on a whim and got a call the next day for an interview. I don't know what made me stand out. I do have a lot of retail experience and an MBA, but most of my coworkers do not have much experience. If I were you I would ask to speak with the store manager. You have to apply online, but that personal, "I really am interested, I am a responsible person, I know a lot about animals, I would be an asset to you and this store!" touch might help.
