His tail will heal up. Just be sure to keep his water extra clean until it heals up and keep an eye out for any infection. New growth will be a clearish white color that is smooth along the rip.

Watch for black or red coloring around the rip or any fuzziness in appearance.

If you keep the water clean with an extra weekly water change he should be absolutely fine. Infection usually only sets in with immune compromised fish and bad conditions.
