This may seem obvious to everyone in this forum....but what is the proper way to pronounce "betta". Phonetically, it would be with a short "e", but every pet store I've gone into pronounces it with a long "a" . I just was wondering the correct version!

I pronounce it with the long "a" sound, but I've heard it pronounced more with the short "e" sound. I see it as Tomato Tomahto

While we're on the subject plakat is pronounced plah-ket, right? Or am I crazy?
I've been going with pla-kaat. I've never encountered a single person working in a pet store that even knows what I plakat is so I always have the advantage.

Baytah is how I pronounce it. It has always come out of my mouth when I say it. Even friends who've owned them say it like that.

Strawberry don't feel bad, I'm crap at saying some plants and wild types names too, I don't even try. Same with some of the names people choose.

Hahaha! Sometimes that's all you can do!

Too funny, we ran into the "aquatic specialist" at the pet store locally and he kept saying "bay-tah" and my husband kept saying "beh-tah". The guy even corrected him and I chimed in with, "Well, the internet says..." lol

I have been calling them bay-tahs forever before I found YT videos on them and this forum.

lol, that exact same thing happened to me.The guy kept saying 'bay-tah' every time I asked about the 'betters',he kept saying it his way louder each time, lol.I just ignored him and kept pronouncing it 'betters' like I always have.

In some shops I just avoid it all by asking about 'the fighter fish.'

From what I remember reading Plakat is supposedly pronounced Pluh-kot over in Thailand. Could be wrong, but that's what I remember it being since it was so strange. But yes, we all just say Plah-ket :)
