Looks like a male to me.

 

I agree with vilmarisv, looks like a male veiltail.

 

Just an add note: he/she lives next to a female that he/she can see, but has not blown a bubble nest or even showed intrist in or flared at. But he/she flares HUGE!!

 

I still think it's a male.
He's got long ventrals and a definite beard. He might be young, his growth might've been stunned along the way or he's product of bad genetics as his fins are shorter than a nornal VT.

 

That is a male, either undeveloped or stunted.

The caudal fin is much to long to be a female, also female veiltales, their tails look almost like a oval.

Hi Thomasdog. This is a difficult one. The dorsal and anal fin both say female but that tail says male. Does (s)he have an eggspot? About how big is Sparky? If (s)he is still very small then there is a good chance Sparky will be a male. Very cute little fellow.

Keep Sparky's water clean and in a few days, the tail should heal up and we can see what it looks like.

 

I really have no idea what an eggspot is... she is ~3inches from nose to tail, and I am pretty sure his tail has always been like that... never showed any sign of tail biting or ripped fins. I think? Will post a new video tonight, will see if I can get him to flare.

 

an eggspot is that white dot under the betta's belly, shown in females. but also be shown in very young males :I

 

3 inches is actually close to full grown. See if you can get him to flare and spread his tail out. Otherwise, he might be a plakat or a roundtail. Judging from the anal and dorsal fins, I don't think he's just a veiltail. He's a short-finned betta of some sort.
