My mom's betta fish has developed a large white growth on the top of his head, and I'm honestly at a loss about what it could be... hoping to get some help!

Housing:
How many gallons is your tank?
5g
Does it have a filter? yes
Does it have a heater? yes
What temperature is your tank? 79
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration? no
Does your Betta have tank mates? What kind? no

Food:
What food brand do you use?
omega one betta pellets
Do you feed flakes or pellets? pellet
Freeze-dried? no
How often do you feed your Betta? How much? twice a day, 4-5 pellets

Maintenance:
Before your Betta became ill how often did you perform a water change?
once a week
What percentage of water did you change? 25-50%
Do you vacuum the substrate or just dip out water? vacuum... or at least, use a siphon and swirl it around
What additives do you use? just seachem prime for water changes

Water Parameters:
Tested using the API liquid test kit just before posting here
Ammonia: 0ppm
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate: 10ppm
pH: ~7.8ppm (I have trouble reading the color on this one, but around there)
Hardness (GH): don't know
Alkalinity (KH): don't know

Symptoms and Treatment:
When did you first notice the symptoms?
tonight
How has your Betta’s appearance changed? the growth on the head (see pictures)
How has your Betta’s behavior changed? it hasn't... he seems normal, except for the growth
Is your Betta still eating? yes
Have you started treating your Betta? If so, how? no... don't know what to do!
Does your Betta have any history of being ill? no
How long have you owned your Betta? Was he or she a rescue? Don't remember exactly, but about 7-8 months. Got him from a Petsmart, but he's never seemed unhealthy.

Hi Athra~

It's a bit difficult to tell from the photos, but if the lump is solid and firm, it's probably lymphocystis (a viral infection) or a tumor. Sadly, both are common sicknesses for bettas, and there's no cure for either one. Since he's still eating and acting normally, it's probably not a bacterial (more slimy, cloudy) or fungal (more cottony, hairy) infection. As long as the lump isn't affecting his quality of life, I'd suggest just keeping him in warm, clean water and enjoying your time together.

Thank you... not really the news I wanted, but I appreciate you taking a look. Unfortunately I only have my phone for a camera, so it's hard to get better photos... but it definitely doesn't look slimy, and I don't *think* it looks cottony... I'll just hope he can keep being his normal self for a while :(

Looks like a build up of pigmentation to me; hyperpigmentation. It occurs frequently on Betta's in the form of a cyst similar to Lympho, only it's not viral, it's usually hereditary. Much like Lympho or a tumor, there is no cure for these cysts and they may fall off in time but usually they end up pushing against organs internally as it grows inside and out. The fish can live anywhere from a couple weeks to over a year with it, it's all about how fast it grows and the genetics of the fish. Basically, just keep on making him happy and let him live out the rest of his life peacefully :) That's the best thing you can do for him.
