Hi there! I am a beginner (bordering moderate) fish keeper and that has recently discovered betta keeping! Or, at least, the correct way to do it. Pictured above is my new Delta Tail, Gemini. (I'm thinking he may be a marble, but I am not quite sure.) Yes, he is still in the cup...I was a bit excited. I am a huge animal lover, and find them absolutely fascinating! Becoming a Veterinarian is my largest goal and greatest dream. For a while, I actually considered Marine Biology and am still interested in it.

For a very long time, I was stuck in the 'Bettas are easy and can be kept in a small bowl' scam. Though I never really questioned it (I and many of my friends had believed that for so long), my poor fish always did badly. Eventually, I reasoned I was either a very bad fish keeper, or Bettas were just an unhealthy species. I didn't find out the truth until I started doing research on the fish. Seeking a hobby I would enjoy, I started breeding Guppies and Mollies. It was really easy...too easy. To the point it was boring. Hoping to find a challenge, I decided to look into breeding the beautiful betta. Wow! There is so much I do not know. Bettafish.com was one of the websites I came across. After looking into it and reading around the website, I decided to join you all. Currently, I have put breeding on hold while I learn the basics of Betta care. Eventually, when I feel ready, I hope to step into breeding. For now, be prepared for a bunch of newbie questions! Advice and tips are greatly appreciated.

Hello Zodiac! I'm Jewel, I'm new here too. Like all the people on here, you have been bitten by the Betta Bug!!! Prepare to be amazed (even further) by the un-boring world of bettas! :) Gemini does indeed look to be a marble, watch his colors change hehe. If you have any questions just give the world a shout out and we will be there at your service.

Since tips are appreciated, then: I would recommend a good tank that is more wide than it is tall (bettas do indeed come from "mud puddles" that are slightly deeper than normal puddles, but they are still "puddles" and per their nature bettas like wider shallower- NOT TOO SHALLOW- waters), a sponge filter (because the flow will push your betta around a lot less than a power filter, etc.), and a Hydor Theo 25watt heater (because it has an adjustable temp setting and is widely revered in the betta community). Food brands recommended are New Life Spectrum, Omega One, and Hikari Betta Bio-Gold. Water conditioner brand recommended is Seachem Prime. Hope that wasn't too long for you, and any other members, please correct me if I got something wrong! :) Welcome to the Fish Tank!

Welcome to the forum :) It's great that we hooked you in to us first! Try not to feel too bad about your previous bettas or how you treated them, it's not your fault that there is a lot of misinformation spread around - especially from pet stores! Just be happy in the knowledge that your current betta(s) will be spoiled <3

Gemini is beautiful and does look to be a marble. Not sure if its the picture but it looks like the tail is double lobed? If so your boy is a Double Tail, not delta. Heres a great thread for that if you haven't already found it Betta Tails & Colors

Betta breeding is quite the challange, plus you have to be prepared for the possibility of 100-300+ fry and feeding and finding homes for most of them. So definitely hold off on that till you can have a whole set up ready well before you put any fish in the tank of love.

@Jewel
Rice patties and canals are where they are from, not puddles at all. Only during droughts do they dry out to "puddles". They are more like streams, long and decently wide, and a couple feet deep.

Also Hikari is not a good brand (used to be but changed) as it's full of fillers. Generally you look for anything with the first 3 ingredients being meat, anything else like corn/soy/wheat is a filler.

Welcome to the forum as well. Be sure to double check you facts before helping others ;)
